What is the best temperature to serve a Rhône Valley wine?

Updated on 05/21/2026

Serving temperature plays an essential role in fully appreciating the aromas and balance of a wine. Red wines from the Northern Rhône Valley, especially those from the Syrah grape variety like Saint-Joseph appellation wines, are generally served between 16 and 18°C. This temperature allows their black fruit and spice aromas, as well as their structure, to unfold. White wines, crafted from grape varieties like Marsanne, Roussanne, or Viognier, are best enjoyed between 10 and 12°C to preserve their freshness and their fruity and floral aromas. A temperature that is too cold can mask the aromas, while a wine served too warm can appear more alcoholic. Respecting the right serving temperature allows you to fully enjoy the qualities of a Rhône Valley wine.
